Digital Book Chat! Exploring Education through Technology

27 comments:

  1. Welcome to our Digital Book Chat! My name is Jeana Hardin, the Director of Instructional Technology for Cherokee County Schools. We will be joined by Jodi Alverson, the Assistant Superintendent of Cherokee County Schools~

Initially, we decided to begin discussion utilizing Robert Marzano's Classroom Instruction That Works! However, if there are other books that you have found to be useful in your teaching (regardless of what they are, please toss their titles onto this blog!) The greatest characteristic of technology is the ability to be flexible. We won't allow our discussions to be contained to any single topic, idea or medium. Please begin by introducing yourself with a brief blog entry. Can't wait to get started!

  2. Hello, my name is Cindy Brockway. I am an Exceptional Children teacher for Cherokee County Schools. I am a novice "blogger" (as evidenced by my first comment!!!).

The idea of a digital book club is such an intriguing concept. I look forward to participating, sharing my experiences, and learning more about empowering struggling learners.

  3. Hello fellow bloggers!
My name is Renee Deweese and I am a media coordinator for Cherokee County Schools. I have taken several online classes and have 'blogged' some, but not enough to claim to be good at it.

I have wanted to read Marzano's book for awhile now but needed a little motivation. This blog opportunity did the trick!

    Thanks!!

  7. I have to admit that I have never been in a group of 4 before and had two of us named Renee. It seems odd.
I have blogged before and have found it very simple and easy to use. Hope everyone is warm.

  8. Sorry, I am Renee, also! I teach fourth grade in Swain county. I look forward to getting to know all of you and enjoying this chance to discuss and learn.

  10. Hello Fellow Bloggers: I just have to comment on the commercial put out by Kaplan University, where the professor begins by apologizing to the class for an "educational system that has failed you...it's time for a system that adapts to you instead of expecting you to adapt to it!" wow...very powerful. Anyone else seen it?

  11. Hello All!
My name is Jenny McMahan. I am a certified elementary teacher who taught for three years in CCS. I am currently a part-time Kindergarten TA, and this online blogging opportunity really caught my interest. I have heard that this book is a really great read, and I look forward to my first ever blogging experience!

  12. Hello Everyone! My name is Brandy Raper and I teach Pre-K at Ranger Elementary Middle School. This is the second time that I have blogged, but I must say this was the hardest time I have had trying to post. I thought that I knew my way around these computers, but technology always has a way of humbling you. Michele thanks for telling me to try at home. It worked much better.
I have taught Pre-K for going on 11 years so the material in this book has all been very new to me. I look forward to learning more about different classroom strategies and some about the testing arena of public education. Happy Blogging!

  13. Hello, my name is Pam Rollins. I am a computer teacher at Hiwassee Dam High School. I have tried to stay out of the social networking, IM, and blog communities. It is time for me to enter the real world now along with my curriculum and students. I hope to gain valuable experience from this to help in my classroom. I also look forward to learning different classroom strategies to help my students. I hope all of these experiences will help me as I renew my national board certificate next year. I look forward to this experience.

  14. After MUCH user error, I'm finally here! Jeana can vouch for my lack of experience in this format! I have completed some online classes for my MA, enjoy a message board now and again, and have blogged minimally. Oh, BTW, I'm Ronda Phillips. I teach English Language Arts and teach and consult in Academically Gifted Education at MES, MMS, and MHS. I've been teaching 15 years 12 of those Cherokee County.

  15. I agree with Brandy....just getting into this blog has been a very humbling experience. I have tried to post from school, but keep getting a 'this page cannot be displayed' error.

I would like to have some direction on this blog....are we reading to a certain place before blogging or are we just sort of doing this on our own and chipping in wherever we want to? I guess my OCD is coming out here...

BTW....Hi Renee. I must admit as well that I have never been in a blog this small w/another Renee. I think it is cool!!

  16. Well, I can start us out with a resource:
    http://gets.gc.k12.va.us/VSTE/2008/
I just found this and it is very interesting!

I am looking forward to getting started. Renee and Renee are set to roll! I have had blogs with my students and such for 2 or 3 years now. Everyone will love it!

  17. I agree about the humbling experience and like Renee my OCD is kicking in. Do we have specifics on the reading? I "volunteered" to participate in the staff BOB competition against the middle schools students and now have 4 BOB books to also read! So if I ever wonder off on something totally off target you will know I am blogging about the wrong book :) I do really look forward to this!

  18. Also I just checked out that website Renee (We may have to add an initial to your name, because I don't one which one it was from). It is neat! I especially liked the cooperative learning section and the website and game links! Thank you. I have never blogged so if I "talk/blog" to much just let me know. If I only had imaginary hands to wave along with the conversation this would be great! I found the "Art of Questioning" link a useful tool on the website also. I had always thought of the verb usage in questions to be important but never really having an "art" to the way I question. I thought this was an interesting statement from the website. "Still, a growing body of observation and research suggests that teachers' uncertainty about how they question cannot, or should not, be explained simply as a lack of explicit knowledge."

  19. I would LOVE to add an initial so you aren't confused but I am really having way too much fun this way. I see you are Donna Collins. I guess I could be Renee Peoples. But why?! I never thought about the possibility of "blogging" too much. I do talk to much, though, so maybe it is a danger for me! Glad you liked the site. I am still investigating all the information I found there and it is amazing!

  20. Hey Ladies! I was sitting here reading your comments and giggling a little. I must admit I LOVE to talk also, but blogging is a little new to me and has been a bit frustating. I'm with you on how far are we reading? I don't think that's OCD, but the teacher in us instead. We like to give and get direction. Donna you must enjoy that reading. Good luck with the BOB. Oh by the way loved your parents Christmas lights. Awesome as always!

  21. Did someone mention frustrating? I'd like to second, or third that! I thought I understood what I was doing at least three different times...turns out I was only about half right, half the time. I successfully posted from home Friday afternoon, thus entertaining my children with the Snoopy dance, but this morning, I felt like I was going around my elbow to get to my thumb getting everything logged on to be here. Sheesh... But this is a technology CEU we're earning, and I figure I'm getting my money's worth. LOL

I, too, would like some direction on how much to read and if there are any overriding questions we are to be addressing. I'd vote for spell check, too, while we're compiling a wish list.

I, too, talk too much. :/

  22. Welcome Renee Peoples! You have a model blog profile. Everyone take a minute to click through Renee's Blog profile, check out her other blogs, and web page!
